This week, the videogame’s news articles have hovered around the new PS4’s announced by Sony during their Playstation Meeting, and more specifically around the PS4 Pro. In case you wonder, Playerone.tv already told you whether you should buy it or not, and what this surge of new power means as far as performance is concerned. In this news article, we will be comparing the latest of the PlayStation brand with the Xbox Scorpio, which name code is set to change before 2017. Which of the two will be more powerful ? Is the technological gap that big ? Answers are below …

PS4 Pro V.S Xbox Scorpio – Advantage to Microsoft when it comes to sheer power

As you know, the next console by Microsoft will be significantly more powerful than the PS4 Pro, for two reasons. The first reason is to be found is the components Microsoft chose to implement in the console : Contrary to the PS4 Pro which will only feature the AMD Polaris architecture, the Scorpio will feature a mix between the Polaris and the Zen technology to send out more horse power to the TV. The second reason is of course linked to the release date. Basing our analysis on the architecture of both components, it would not be incongruous to come to the conclusion that the Scorpio will be the more powerful one as it will take advantage of the newest technology that AMD will have released by the time the Scorpio comes out. The PlayStation console will settle for the current existing technology.

When it comes down to the number, the PS4 will release a maximum power of 4,2 Tflops, when the Scorpio’s power is announced to reach the 6Tflops. Microsoft has the advantage also when it comes to bandwidth as the latest from Microsoft will send sout 320GB/s against 218 for the PS4 Pro. There’s a significant difference between the two consoles, and most likely also between the games graphics.

Gaming in upscaled 4K on PS4 Pro and Native 4K on Xbox Scorpio

It is pretty hard to weigh in on this issue. It is difficult to tell what the developers will do with both consoles. A few games like Horizon: Zero Dawn seem to already be 4K native ready on PS4 Pro, other will benefit from upscaling and some others like Mass Effect: Andromeda will take advantage of a hybrid version of both options. Crystal Dynamics will use the surplus of power of the PS4 Pro to send out a much graphically improved version of Rise of Tomb Raider, in 1080p and 30 fps.

One thing is for sure, if developers want to work with the 4K on Scorpio, the process will be much easier than on a PS4 that will most likely be worn down much more rapidly in this resolution.  The possibility to have native 4K on Scorpio is much more likely, but everything lies in the hand of the developers.

Should you wait for Scorpio ?

Like always when it comes to consoles, we advise you to first see which games have caught your eyes.

But if it comes to sheer power, Scorpio comes naturally as the console to buy at the end of 2017, especially if you wish to play on a 4K TV.  The technical gap that separates Scorpio and PS4 Pro is far bigger than the one between the PS4 and the Xbox One. Only 0,52 Tflops separate both current-gens consoles as opposed to the 2tflops that sit between the Pro and The Scorpio.  The only two things that will weigh in in the decision  are the price and the line-up. A drastic and very personal choice, as always !
